Nuang Hike

On the 6th of December, there were 15 of us in a group who gone up to Gunung Nuang, Hulu Langat and that was no easy task. The trip was organised by Lafuma Malaysia Adventure Group (LMAG) for its customers and it is open for the publics as well. It's all started at 7:00am at Lafuma Bangsar where consists of 4 cars leave the shop heading towards Hulu Langat.

The journey from KL to Gunung Nuang entrance took us around 45 minutes. Some of us have never been to Nuang before thought that since it is just within Selangor state and it shouldn’t take that “long” to reach the destination. As usual we started the climb with some briefing and the guide and sweeper for the day is Muzammil and CK from Lafuma.

We started our hike with the pretty rocky, uphill and never ending trail. We went through the pine tree forest and bamboo gardens. We couldn't differentiate what are the differences because they all look the same to us. Besides, we had a few water stops and rest along the way and it took us about 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the first campsite, Kem Lolo, which is our initial target.

After a small rest at Kem Lolo, we decided to continue our climb to the next campsite, while some will stay at Kem Lolo after the exhausted hike. Then, we gave our steps the final push through the red clay up to Kem Pacat, a campsite before the peak. We trekked for almost 2 hours to reach the campsite. We had our light lunch and chilled out at Kem Pacat for a while.

After filled up our stomach, we decend from Kem Pacat at about 2:00pm. We went straight to the river for a clean up and cooling bath when we reached Kem Lolo. We dismissed at about 6:00pm from the entrance. The journey will be continued...the next mission will be the peak!

360° Panorama View on top of Rasa Hill (22/11/08)

The rainy season in November didn’t stop LMAG’s hiking activity. We went to Rasa Hill, which is 285 meters above sea level and located at Bukit Terek Forest Reserve, Hulu Selangor. Most of the past hikers do not know the exact name of the hill because Rasa Hill was named after Two Ringgit Hill by them.

We started the climb at 8:30am in the morning. Suddenly, the sky started to rain. However, we were lucky that the rain was just lasted for a few minutes. The trail is pretty short and it can be divided into three different parts. The first section of our journey was slow as the terrain full with loose rock and soft soil. At one part of the route, we need to climb a 90 degrees wall.

Next, we trekked inside the jungle that is full with ‘Bertam’ trees. Then, we passed through the section with ‘Resam’ trees vegetation before we finally reached for the summit of Rasa Hill. The hike is interesting because the peak was marked by Trigo Station and 360° panorama. We also can see Genting Highlands and Titiwangsa Range clearly.

After the groups photo session, as usual some of us took photos alone for personal collection. We trekked down the Rasa Hill through the same route and dismiss at 11:30am. Although the hiking trip was short but most of us enjoyed the scenic view. Even some of us plan to revisit Rasa Hill again, especially for nature photography, sunset or sunrise.

Bukit Tabur Revisit (18 Oct 2008)

It has been awhile before we are back to Bukit Tabur again. However, this time we will be heading to Bukit Tabur East instead of West as previously. A group of 16 people has signed up for the climb to this infamous Klang Dam Gate Quartz Ridge. We started our journey at the foothill where the Syabas water authority were but on the east side instead of the west side and following the huge water pipe from the dam. We cross a small river before meeting the rest of the hikers at the starting point. A safety briefing and ice-breaking session was conducted by our guide, Apip before ascending the hill.

The terrain was steep and mixed with some mild rock climbing session. On certain section, we have to pull on the ropes provided in order to continue on our journey. Although the hike is short but it is pretty demanding as we not only need to use our leg but our biceps as well. A trek and climb for an hour paid handsomely with a nice scenery and view of the city at the peak. We could also see the peak of Bukit Tabur West from here and scenic view of the Klang Dam as well. That soothes our tiredness while most of us trying to get a few click of the view from the top. We take couple of minutes break before heading back track from where we came from as the weather is expected to be cloudy soon.

Backtracking is also as challenging as climbing up as one might not careful and slip through the ridge. We take care on each step that we made and better be slow rather than sorry. It started drizzling when we descending and luckily the trail was short and we managed to reach our starting point before it starts raining cat and dog. The trip was short and enjoyable ones where we have a balance of good workout with a bonus scenic view.

Successful in Conquering 5 Volcano Peaks

Sometime in end of April and early of May 2008, a group of 20 strong hikers from Orang Gunung Kuala Lumpur (OGKL), an affiliate member of Lafuma Malaysia Adventure Group (LMAG) has successfully conquered five volcano peaks (Semeru, Arjuno, Welirang, Penanjakan and Bromo) within 8 days expeditions to Indonesia. Exploratory Trail at Kota Damansara Community Forest

On 14 September 2008 a group of 14 people from LMAG have set to explore forest nearby our KL city namely Kota Damansara Community Forest. It is one of the few green lung left within the city vicinity apart from Bukit Gasing in PJ, Taman Tun Dr Ismail & Mont Kiara Forest Reserve, FRIM in Kepong, Bukit Tabur in Taman Melawati and Bukit Apeh in Cheras. The Kota Damansara Community Forest is rich with biodiversity of flora and fauna just like Bukit Gasing in PJ. The forest area was huge and one can hike from Kota Damansara to Bukit Lanjang as well as to Sungai Buloh R&R at Plus NSE Highway area.

All of us set to meet at the starting point at 7.45am instead of the usual place at our Lafuma Bangsar outlet. The guide for the trip was none other than Apip and Ng being the sweeper for the day. We have a light safety briefing and introduction session before we head for the trail at about 8am. The trail started on the left of the community shade and seems to be easy. However within a few minutes the trail was on uphill mode. Some of our members arrived late and we take this opportunity to take five while waiting for them to join in. One thing good about this forest is that you can be access via handphone anywhere as there are adequate signal coverage here in case you are lost or in emergency situation.

The overall trail was easy with slight uphill and downhill mode but one need to be careful as certain places might be slippery and watch out before you grab on the plant as some with torn on it. We make a few stop at certain point where Apip show us some unique parasite plant on top of a huge tree as well as leaf which seems to reflect bright glow during the dark.

With intense development within the forest border, it seems to be some light landslide which caused fallen trees along our trail. At one time, we lost count on how many trees that have fallen along the way and we need to either climb or dunk down to pass through our passage.

There are a lot of trail in this forest and also a favourite spot for Hash runner as well as MNS members for their activities. It happens that the trail we took was also a fresh trail just set by the Hare of one of the Hash club as evident in the trail marker left by them. Since it was a Ramadan Month and some of our friends was fasting, we make our trip short and lasted for only about one and a half hours before we emerged from the forest at the backyard of some residential bungalows at Kota Damansara. We will definitely revisit the place but on a different trail next time, perhaps a longer one. :-)

Lafuma in Kilimanjaro

Sometime in early July 2008, a lovely couple, Steve and Emma both Lafuma members have pledged to fund raise for UNICEF to help the children in developing countries on their charity and fund climb to Mount Kilimanjaro (5,985m), Tanzania, Africa. They are back recently with a successful mission by not only raising more funds than what they have set earlier but also summitted to the one of the highest mountain in Africa! Total funds raised to date was 1,600 Pound!

Let's congratulate Steve and Emma for their challenging feats and their determination is definitely something we should learn from. Well with a total of six days expedition mission (from 21/7/08 to 26/7/08) to summit the gigantic mountain, the story from both of them is well worthwhile to read. For those who intend to summit this African highest peak, you should not miss this valuable tips from this couple. Read their tales at http://journals.worldnomads.com/steve_and_emma/

Fresh & light - Sg Perdik Waterfall trip (30/08/08)

This trip was on Merdeka Eve. We call our trip as Merdeka Hike. It takes me a few days before I pen down in this blog. It is much easier for my leg to move anywhere rather than my little finger doing the job of editing as I consider myself have a very active leg. Thank you to all who participate and contributes to LMAG Sg Perdik Waterfall trips.

Early morning of the Merdeka eve we gather at Lafuma Bangsar Boutique for car pooling towards Hulu Langat. Two cars left from Bangsar while we meet another one car at Pekan Bt 18 Hulu Langat.

Around 9 am our cars entered Hutan Lipur Hulu Perdik area. We are the only visitor here. We are trekking in one group. Trekking along the Hulu Perdik valley and crossing the river stream three times. Continued our trail to hike just a few minutes before we reach the waterfall (cascades).

The waterfall has several places where we can have a nice shower. We spent about half an hour enjoying ourselves here. Some of us have a refreshing shower. The trip was short, light and the most important was enjoyable. Meet us in next outing trip.

A member of our participant, Brother Ng YH has posted some of the pictures in his weblog here for sharing.

Challenging Hill Hike!

Participant before start trekking

Pine Tree Hill - Twin Peak (16/08/08)

Since March 2008 once a month we run a mountain hiking activities. Started with G. Nuang followed by G. Hitam, G. Datuk and G. Gap. On August our challenge is to hike two peaks in a day where we have identified Pine Tree Hill – Twin Peak located at Fraser Hill District. ’Hill’ is something we kind of downgrade our challenge since we have been to mountains for the past months. However this is not a normal hill. Why! Read our full blog.

Pine Tree Hill just 4777 feet above the sea level. The Pine Tree Hill trail starts from the top of Fraser Hill which both hill altitude range is quite similar. The challenge is to cross 6KM from the starting point to Pine Tree Peak and another half an hour to Twin Peak which is at the distance of not more than 1KM.

The journey started from our Lafuma Bangsar outlet after most of us having our breakfast. We set to gather at Fraser Hill Gate before drove up together to Fraser Hill. On 11:35AM, we arrived at Fraser Hill and lodged Police Report on our activity as part of the safety measure before heading to the jungle.

10 minutes before 12 o'clock we start our trekking. Initially the track was flat for the first 15 minutes. After that the trail was downward slope, follow by up, flat, down, flat and up and up. We were trekking deep into the jungle. At certain points, we found border stone (Selangor – Pahang) along the trail which means we are at the state border line.

Half an hour before we reach the Pine Tree summit, we break at the shelter nearby which was also the last water point. We take a few minutes of rest while waiting for other friends which is still not with us. The weather looks like going to rain soon. Sharp 1:30 pm we continued our challenge.

The last challenge is to reach Pine Tree Summit which takes us to 90 degree vertical wall hike. The existing old rope was there to help us climb up the steep slope. Last person reached the summit on 2:30pm. We heard news from our sweeper; Bro Wong give up on the hike and just stops till last water point shelter while Bro Oon accompanied him. It’s a good try since both of them have at least hiked for 5KM one way.

On top of the Pine Tree Hill, we take our lunch. The dark cloud is fast approaching us and looks like going to rain anytime. We moved faster. Rushing to take group photos and prepare to move forward. We started another challenge to reach for Twin Peak. Some of us decided not to join and plan to head back as they have another agenda on early evening that day while remaining nine (9) of us proceed to trek to Twin Peak. After 5 minutes trekking finally the expected rain comes.

Another 5 minutes later, 2 of our members decided to call it a day for Twin Peak and head back down. Sharp half an hour from Pine Tree Summit we have reached Twin Peak. It was still raining and luckily our sweeper, Muzammil brought along underwater camera which we managed to have our group photos. All of the hikers showed satisfaction and achievement while smiling along with the photo shoot and I’m proud with them. Again, we rush going down and back to civilization.

On 6:30pm we finished our jungle trail. Trip Success!!!.

Enjoyable trip @ Sg Lepoh Waterfall

On 26 July 2008, LMAG have a trip to Sg. Lepoh Waterfall, Hulu Langat, Selangor. As usual, Lafuma Bangsar is our meeting point. 2 cars with 8 persons depart towards Hulu Langat. We stopped at Petronas Bt 7 Jalan Cheras to wait for another participants in 1 car to join our convoy. At Pekan Bt 18, Hulu Langat we stop for breakfast. Pekan Batu 18 (18 miles from Kuala Lumpur) is the last town before reaching Sg. Lepoh.

When arrived at Sg. Lepoh car park, immediately the parking attendant approach us to collect parking fees. Mentioning “Dalam banyak durian? (there is a lot of durian inside the jungle), Apip been told that “Kalau ada ambillah, tak payah bayar" (you can take it to eat without pay if available) by the parking attendant. So our car park fees include durian as well, what a great deal!

The program start with ice breaking session, Adinson and her mum, Marie. Ori Osawa and Robert both foreigners, Genevy with all white shirt & short pants, Jakie and her umbrella, Sarawakian loving couple, Juckson & Rachel, Nana, Apip wife, Eryn, lastly Muzammil, one of our LMAG crew.

Firstly, our trail crosses durian orchards. Now is durian season. We can smell the durian along our trail. Beside the durian, the beautiful ginger plant also can be seen at both side of our trail. When we enter to the jungle, we try our luck to search for falling durians but to no avail on that time or else we would be feasting ourselves when we reach the waterfall.

There was a old small dam located inside the jungle. Since mid 90’s the dam has not been used after the some broken pipes detected due to falling trees that crash on it. We continue trekking and our trail just beside the river stream. We finally saw the big waterfall (cascade).

Robert was getting excited too fast when he saw the waterfall and be the first person to dip in the pool while the rest of us still cooling down from the trekking activity. All of us enjoy the surrounding nature as well as bathing at the pool. Some of us just get some fun ride sliding through the water cascades (only advisable with correct technique and safety precaution measures taken). Jakie & Marie also enjoy watching us while relax at the side of the waterfall pool.

It is hard to say how joyful we are at that particular moment. No words can describe how we felt. Check out on our series of photos, only pictures can tell 1001 stories. It can only show how happy and enjoy we are. Experience yourselves by participating our hikes in future to enjoy the same experience and joyful moment that we have like this trip of ours.
